At the center of the captivating rolling meadows, resided a young shepherd. His being was mostly pure, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was to tend to his flock of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the gales through the single tree on the hilltop were his only companions. Day after day, guarding his wards inculcated in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.
Yet, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. In one such instance from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a naughty plan.
Tales of wolves preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One day he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no beast.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This trick continued for a few more days. Yet, one day, a website real wolf did come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the village only to receive a lesson on honesty and the results of false alarms.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was anciently.
